Arrival in Hedeby with beer on the dock
Sunday 21 July, day 21 of the Skjoldungen voyage.
Today we reached one of our goals. We arrived in Hedeby at 17:00. Our sailing was once again a wonderful experience. From our new friends from Kappeln and the good ship Fix, we sailed through the winding course of Schlien. An exciting challenge for everyone and great fun. There are just so many ships in the fjord, so we constantly have to be on our toes. The railway bridge closed right in front of us as we approached. We were a little offended, but that was just the way it was. The next time the bridge opened, we were one of the first to go through.
After many bends etc. we met a sailor who passed us and asked if we wanted to spend the night in tents in Hedeby's museum harbour. Again, you are surprised by the hospitality. One of the members welcomed us with beer on the quay. Now we are in the butter hole in the harbour. We spend the night in our tents and visit the museum tomorrow before sailing towards the mouth of the Schlien again. We have no doubt that Ottar and Wulfstan would have done the same. When the wind is right, you sail.
We are limited by our deadline. The Skjoldungen must be back at the museum by the end of July.
