From Hundested to Aarhus in one go

The Viking Ship Museum's reconstruction of Skuldelev 1, Ottar. Summer cruise 2024, from Hundested to Aarhus in one go.

Tuesday 9 July 2024, the third day of Ottar's voyage.

The liner day in Hundested was spent getting the ship ready for Kattegat - attaching the kitchen boxes, tightening the rigging, putting in the birch wood wirthys and other small repairs. Now we're on our way again to the 'Snekkeløb' at Sjællands Rev...

Mr Suzuki (the motor) helped us the first part in no wind.

We then carried out a successful attempt where a guard crew, i.e. 4 people, set sail and sailed the ship alone.

We set off briskly from there with the wind on our stern across to Jutland: one leg in just under 14 hours, almost the same course all the way, and at a speed of 6-7 knots for much of the distance...

That's what Ottar is built for, and if there wasn't land in the way and a modern appointment calendar in our pocket, we would probably have continued on.

Now we'll see what the wind does and where we go from here.
