Sunday July 3rd the small viking ship " Skjoldungen" and it's crew will set out on an outstanding trial voyage from Nanortalik to Nuuk in order to shed a new light on viking life in the distant land that Erik the Red named Greenland.
During the trip, the crew will also collect sailing data, which will later be used in collaboration with researchers to fill in the gaps in our understanding of how difficult – or easy – it was to sail along the coast of Greenland in a Viking ship, propelled only by oars and sail.
"Skjoldungen" is a reconstruction of "Skuldelev 6" - one of the 1000 year old viking ships on display in the Viking Ship Hall - and the exhibition will be situated right next to the original ship for as long as the trial voyage is ongoing. As part of the exhibition guests can also follow a live-track that is frequently updated with information about the ship's position. The trial voyage is ongoing from July 3rd to August 10th while the exhibition will be on display until the end of August.
The voyage can also be followed on the museum's website with live-tracking and daily logs from the crew.
