The Viking Ship Museum offer free admission and lots of exciting events on the evening of Saturday 23rd June, from 17:00 – 20:30 to celebrate Saint John’s Eve.
One absolute highpoint will be when the Viking Ship Museum's reconstruction of a 30 meter longship - the Sea Stallion arrives in the Harbour 20:00 - 20:30.
Genuine Olympic torch - but no fire - on board the longship, Sea Stallion
An authentic Olympic torch will be carried on board Sea Stallion into harbour - but without any light in it due to the drought that has hit Denmark this spring. The torch was used during the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in South Korea and once it arrives on land at the Museum harbour, it will continue on a 4km-long torch run through Roskilde.
The Viking Ship Museum celebrates Olympic Days with free admission and activities on Saint John’s Eve – the 23rd June from 17:00 – 20:30.
From 19:30, spectators can begin to keep an eye out for Sea Stallion as the ship is due to arrive with the Olympic torch in the Museum Harbour at 20:00-20:30. The torch will be borne by a previous Olympian. On board, there will also be two banners, carried by two previous Olympic banner-bearers from the Roskilde area – and the 45-strong crew!
When the torch arrives on land, it will be given to athletes from Roskilde’s sports clubs, who will bring it on a 4.2km long torch run which will conclude at Byparken, where Mayor Joy Mogensen will give a Mid-summer speech.

The Viking Ship Museum celebrates the arrival of the Olympic torch with an exciting evening programme from 17:00 – 20:30 and there will be free admission to the entire museum during this time period.

The Viking Workshops on the Museum Island are open.
Paint a shield, make a bead necklace or strike a coin.
These activities have an extra charge.

It’s free to take part in the family guided tours – everyone is actively involved in the story and it’s fun for both adults and children.

20.30 - 23.00 Saint John's Eve celebrations
The celebrations continue in the nearby city park with choral singing, speeches - and the evening's big finale is fireworks show over the fjord.
Saint John’s Eve menu at Café Knarr
For Saint John’s Eve, Café Knarr has put together a delicious menu based on local, midsummer ingredients. This will be served from 17:30 – 20:00
Main Course: 150 DKK
- Ramson-marinated chicken breast
- Summer salad with pearl barley, cabbage, green leaves and carrot
- Oven-baked parsnips
- Pea pesto with ramson mayonnaise
Dessert: 60 DKK
- Red berry pudding with cream and wood sorrel
The ‘Olympic Days’ event in Roskilde is organised by an association of previous Danish Olympians and the Danish Olympic Club. It is this association who secured the arrival of the torch to Roskilde Saturday 23rd June.
Athletes from Roskilde’s sports clubs will run the 4.2km long route which will bring the torch past the Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde Cathedral, Kulturstrøget and Folkeparken before the torch will be used to light the other torches for the Saint John’s Eve bonfire.
