The Aars Stone

At Aars cemetery, just beside the church, there’s a rune stone with the inscription: “Asser raised this stone in memory of Valtoke, his lord. The stone proclaims that it will long be here. It stands to honour Valtoke’s cairn.” There has been much discussion as to whether the stone refers to the Jelling dynasty, as "lord" in Old Norse does not refer to the king. It is assumed therefore that Asser had a military link to the central power.
