The Rune Stone in Front of Ansgar Church
10km west of Kroppedal, there is a rune stone in front of Ansgar Church in Hedehusene village. The stone’s history goes back thousands of years; further even than when it was carved with runes during the Viking era. The bowl symbols – bowl-shaped depressions in the surface – reveal that this granite stone had already been worked by human hands in the Bronze Age and used for cult rituals. The first accounts of the stone’s discovery suggest that it was once part of a ship tomb. The stone counts as one of the oldest surviving rune stones from the 700s. Its inscription reads: – “Hornbore’s stone – descendant of Svide.” The nickname "Hornbore" possibly means horn carrier or horn blower. Is a musical instrument being referred to here, or a Viking helmet with horns, which is mostly a myth?
