Easter Holiday

Viking ships weren't just carriers of exotic goods from distant lands. They also brought new ideas from the outside world and major cultural changes to Scandinavia.

Viking kings moved away from pagan customs to gain greater political power in Europe, and Christianity also quietly took hold of the Nordic peoples.

Holidays like Easter were celebrated for the very first time in the Nordic countries at the end of the Viking Age.

Child-friendly activities

Every day during the Easter holidays, the Viking king Svend Tveskæg invites you to go on a voyage around the world to bring the most important new goods and ideas back to Denmark.

On the voyage, you will meet merchants from three of the great trading cities of the Viking Age; Hedeby, Paris and Constantinople.

What do you think the king will be most excited for you to bring home?

A barrel filled with a blood-red drink that the French merchant Claude calls ‘red wine’? Or perhaps the small fragrant pieces of bark that the merchant Wasim calls ‘cinnamon’ will appeal to the king?

Take the family tour ‘Go on a voyage around the world’, choose exotic gifts for the king and be rewarded for your efforts with a real silver coin.

In the Hamlet, you can make your very own leather purse to store your hard-earned silver coin.

Go on a voyage around the world!

During the Easter holidays you can go on a family tour of Viking Age Europe.

You'll travel to the trading cities of Hedeby, Paris and Constantinople to find gifts to impress the Danish king. Here you'll meet the merchants Ottar, Claude and Wasim, with whom you can exchange both goods and ideas.

At the end, everyone will receive a real silver coin for their courage in the face of all that is new.

The family tour starts at 11.00 and 14.00. (The tour is best suited for children aged 5-13 with their families).

Make your own leather purse

The sailors had leather purses that were practical for both children and adults to carry various small items. It could be a fire steel, a few coins or a protective amulet.

In the workshop you can make your own leather purse and decorate it with a small bead. You can use the purse to carry various items with you when you have learnt how to become a real sailor on the family tour.

It is also possible to make a purse without joining the family tour.

The workshop starts at 10:30 and ends at 15:30

Guided Tours in the Viking Ship Hall

We take a close look at the five original Viking ships from Skuldelev that sailed Roskilde Fjord 1000 years ago.

The ships vary in size, appearance and shape, and their differences reveal secrets about the people who sailed and used the ships for war, trade and their daily lives in the Viking Age.

The tour starts at 13.00

Play in the Hamlet

The Hamlet in the lower floor of the Viking Ship Hall is the Viking Ship Museum's space for children. Here you can travel 1000 years back in time to the everyday life of the Vikings.

In the Hamlet at the Viking Ship Museum, there is room for adventurous stories to unfold.

Pack a chest for the Viking trader, tuck wooden dolls into a goatskin duvet or cook a feast over the fireplace for those returning from the conquest.

The Maritime Archaeologists' DocuLab

You can also get up close to the past and go behind the scenes in the Maritime Archaeologists' Doculab. Here you can learn about how the museum's maritime archaeologists work and see some of the finds excavated from the seabed around Denmark.

Without the work of maritime archaeologists, we would lack knowledge about Viking trading culture.

You'll find the Maritime Archaeologists' Doculab on Museum Island next to Café Knarr.
