Sea Stallion is going to spend the winter in Dublin

Lifting Sea Stallion is a challenge. The long ship is very light but also very fragile if out of the right element.

The Irish can expect a marvellous sight when Sea Stallion is coming up on land for the winter. The last stretch of this trip will probably lead through the streets of Dublin ... or up above the roofs of the city.

After the seven-week voyage Sea Stallion will moore up on the quays in Dublin in August 2007. But this does not mean the end of the voyage. The last short stretch might become escpecially spectacular.

'Until now we do not know how Sea Stallion is going to spend the winter in Dublin. The National Museum in Dublin wishes to have her placed in front of Collins Barracks – former barracks and fascinating buildings. Collins Barracks are right now being converted to a branch of the National Museum that can hold large exhibitions,' says the head of the Viking Ship Museum's boatyard, Søren Nielsen.

Articulated lorry or helicopter

According to preliminary plans Sea Stallion shall be put in front of the National Museum's main entrance ... if the ship can come up there.

'To get the ship to the National Museum would mean to sail it up on the river Liffey, pull it on land, drive under low bridges,  on a wide and busy road, over a little park and past a train station. We have not come to terms with whether that is realistic. Somebody with a sense for imagination even suggested to lift Sea Stallion with a helicopter,' says Søren Nielsen

Together with the manager of the project, Preben Rather Sørensen, he travels to Dublin by the end of November. Among others they will meet people from the National Museum and a haulage contractor to discuss the plan's feasibility.

'If it does not work out Sea Stallion could be placed on a different spot in Dublin city centre. Next to the ship an exhibition shall be set up and tell about the voyages to and from Dublin,' says Søren Nielsen.
