Status on the food project
Sunday, 7th July 2024, day seven of Skjoldungens the voyage.
The first week of Skjoldungen's expedition is over and this week we have also been working on our food project.
There is a broad consensus that the food tastes good, some people like fish more than others, and that the food is very filling. It's important to eat slowly, it takes time to digest the food. Fish is very filling and you actually have to be careful not to eat too much. The meat is quite sweet as it is marinated in something sweet.
Apples and nuts are a great addition to oatmeal. Lunch with dry fish or meat in combination with crispbread and apples gives the feeling of a full and satisfying meal, the nuts are also great as a small snack. The apples are important because they contribute juice and acidity. The dried fish and meat contains a lot of filling protein and gives you something to chew on as well as a good umami flavour. Crispbread and fish chips add crunchiness for a more varied eating experience.
Overall, we were surprised at how little food was needed to keep us full and well-fed.
We tried soaking the fish for 6-8 hours and cooking it in a little milk, with breadcrumbs, salt and pepper. The result was a whole little dish, absolutely edible.
The food is easy to eat at sea. Whereas we used to cut bread, add cold cuts and share the food around, this food is super easy to pass around the ship.
We could well consider eating food that is more in this style in the future on sailing trips.
