The Viking Ship Museum Roskilde has been working on the project 'Thoroughbred of the sea' for ten years. When the Sea Stallion from Glendalough sets course for the Irish capital Dublin on the 2nd July 2007 this will be the culmination of the biggest experimental archaeological project of the museum ever.
'Thoroughbred of the sea is about both research and communication. We do not wish to hide in a scientific ivory tower - we want to tell the whole world about this historic voyage. In a language that everybody can understand,' says Tinna Damgård-Sørensen, head of the Viking Ship Museum.
Great attention of the media
Therefore the Viking Ship Museum has started a cooperation with Visit Denmark, which is marketing Denmark as a tourist destination in the whole world.
On Sunday 6th May 2007 – almost two months before the voyage to Dublin – the museum and Visit Denmark will open their doors to a group of journalists from Denmark and abroad.
'Visit Denmark chose to work together with us on a press tour for bigger English, German and American media. Furthermore we can invite Danish and Irish media and sponsors to join us. We are totally happy about and proud of that Visit Denmark regards Sea Stallion as an important story and that they want to prioritize the project in their schedule,' tells Tinna Damgård-Sørensen.
In September Visit Denmark's press officers from its foreign branches came to Denmark for a two-day meeting where they settled their press strategies and heard about good stories from Denmark. Visit Denmark's interest in Sea Stallion was also visible then when one afternoon was spent at the Viking Ship Museum. This visit already resulted in inquiries from Germany and Holland among others.
