Albertslund Viking Age Village
On the outskirts of the village of Risby, 5km north of Albertslund is a small Viking village surrounded by woods to the east and overlooking the imposing Store Vejleådalen river valley to the west. Here you are welcome to pull in off the road and visit the intriguing Salshus, a reconstructed long hall from the late Viking Age, as well as the small workshop buildings, also called pit houses, all of which are reconstructions of Viking Age buildings. The stables house pigs, sheep, goats and cats as examples of Viking Age animal husbandry and a barn is also being built at the moment. The Viking Village is an authentic working settlement run by Albertslund Municipality with help from 130 volunteers. Note the coppiced wood around the village where oak trees are coppiced just as in Viking times – producing timber offshoots that ensures long straight trunks for fences and in house building.
