9.45 Skipper’s briefing:
There is a moderate breeze from the east. There are still no changes to observe in the weather forecast. So we must enjoy the sun and the warmth here in England. We won’t be sailing today.
10.00 We went through the procedures for lowering and raising the mast. We lowered the mast once and raised it again slowly and easily, so everyone knew what they had to do. Then we lowered the mast again against the clock; it took 12 minutes until the mast was down and the oarsmen were ready. It took 20 minutes to raise it again, but it can be done more quickly.
The reason why we train this is to make the procedures for handling the mast more effective. We must be able to do it quickly and safely if we are to lower the mast to row more effectively against the wind than plying to windward.
